ASSE Tennessee Valley Chapter Says Goodbye to a Friend

On Thursday, March 25, 2010, the Tennessee Valley Chapter held its monthly meeting. It was the usual meeting with an unusual guest. Virginia Ames, longtime OSHA Compliance Assistance Specialist from the Birmingham Area Office was there as the Guest Speaker. She gave a 45 minute update on the happenings of OSHA. She talked about accident rates, recent accidents, and upcoming changes within the agency. And as always she offered her assistance. She told everyone present that if they needed assistance, they needed to contact her soon as she was retiring. She was saying farewell. After more than 41 years of federal service she was hanging it up. Her federal service included more than 2 years in the U.S. Army as a WAC (Woman’s Army Corps), more than 6 years working for the Air Force and the Army and then over 33 years with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Her duties at OSHA included time as a Compliance Officer, as a Region IV Voluntary Protection Officer and then as a Compliance Assistance Specialist. Virginia had many great qualities but she will be remembered most by the members of the TVC ASSA as someone who was always there to help. She was always a part of the solution, never a part of the problem. She was everyone’s friend and will be truly missed. Thanks for all the years you dedicated to the safety of others. ENJOY YOUR RETIREMENT!!!
